Illuminating Literature: When Worlds Collide (Ed) $10
Teacher: Mindi Leatherman
For this class, we will use the homeschool curriculum titled Illuminating Literature: When Worlds Collide by Sharon Watson. Students will need to purchase the textbook as well as 7 of the novels that go with it. It is important that students purchase the novels with the correct ISBN # so that we can all turn to the same page when we are discussing the novels in class.
Pudd’nhead Wilson by Mark Twain (Dover Publications) ISBN# 0-486-40885-X
The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells (Dover Publications ) ISBN# 0-486-29506-0
Peter Pan by Sir James Barrie (Dover Publications) ISBN# 0-486-40783-7
Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals (Washington Square Press/Pocket Books) ISBN# 0-671-86639-7
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens (Dover Publications) ISBN# 0-486-40651-2
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury (Simon and Schuster) ISBN # 978-1-4516-7331-9
The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis (HarperCollins) ISBN# 978-0-06-065293-7
We will not be reading the novel The Friendly Persuasion that is also listed with this curriculum.
This will be considered a full credit English class for high school. It will require a significant amount of reading at home, and class discussion is expected. The best English classes are when students are ready to talk about what they have read! Essentially students will read a novel a month and one novel over Christmas break (from December 3-January 14). In addition, students will be asked to write a literary analysis over the novels. This will include learning MLA documentation style and how to write and analyze for formal academic papers. Since there is also a creative writing class being offered, each parent will have the option to determine how many papers they would like for their student to write on an individual basis, but the concept of how to write these types of academic papers will be covered in class.
Please note that these novels are secular novels that will be covered from a Christian worldview perspective. However, the content of the novels themselves does require that your high schooler is ready for them. At the start of each novel I will send an email to parents to let them know about topics they may also want to address at home as well.
Inventions and Ideas: (Ed) $20
Teacher: Eron Mosier
In this class students will learn about great ideas, inventions and the inventors that made them. We will work together to try and improve on familiar ideas as well as create our own inventions. We will explore the process from discovering a need, formulating an idea to developing a prototype for our inventions. We will also “apply for a patent”, assess our target audience and create a marketing strategy. This class will require some at home work as students develop their prototypes and advertising strategies.
